Word of the Day
håmā :
buy
Base Function:
verb, noun, adjective
Definition:
/ha↓.maː/
Buy; acquire something for yourself; passing something into one's own sphere of possession, usually through price, value or exchange.
Etymology:
From håūn e̊mā, “wanting to have.”
The word arises from the combination between the impulse of desire and the idea of possession. In håūn, there is the will directed towards something; in e̊mā, there is the state of having, possessing, keeping close to oneself.
With the erosion of expression, håūn e̊mā goes from “wanting to have” to håmā, that is, the concrete act of making what you desire come into your own possession.
The ingressive vowel in hå- symbolically reinforces this movement of attraction inward: the desired object is pulled into the sphere of the possessor.
Example:
- Wa s̆u håmānymatũ
I acquired a house. - La hā håmā plɛro fara tãla.
He will buy a book for a hundred. - håmāmȳh īka kapomo īka.
The thoughtful purchase has been made.
Synonyms:
- = purchase
- = acquire
- = obtain; take for yourself
